Introduction to plethories

Abstract

Plethories and Tall-Wraith monoids were originally introduced in the context of lambda-rings, which are algebraic constructs used to organize the structure of representations of symmetric groups and general linear groups. Despite a reputation of fearsome complexity, they arise quite naturally in the context of pure category theory. It is the goal of this talk to lay bare some quick keys of entry, suitable for category theorists, into these beautiful structures.
